Conservation Program

Understanding how the environment, animals, and humans are interconnected and recognizing the importance of working within the scope of unique Health and welfare, the São Paulo Aquarium has defined its mission as maintaining wild and exotic animals with high levels of welfare, promoting conservation and environmental education that encourages reflection on the importance of environmental preservation. Thus, our Conservation Program is divided into 05 fronts:

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FRIENDS OF THE MANATEE ASSOCIATION (AMPA)

The São Paulo Aquarium (ASP) has a partnership with the Friends of the Manatee Association (AMPA), investing financial resources in research activities, environmental education, and the conservation of the Amazonian manatee species. Among the supported programs, the Amazonian Manatee Reintroduction Program (Trichechus inunguis) stands out, aiming to rescue orphaned calves from the wild, rehabilitate them, and return them to their natural habitat. The primary role of ASP is to fund blood analyses of animals to be reintroduced, as well as monitoring belts to ensure the tracking of these animals after their release into the wild.

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MANTAS DO BRASIL PROJECT

As an Aquarium, we are greatly concerned with preserving aquatic environments. Unfortunately, fishing pressure, pollution, and climate change have significantly impacted these environments. Thus, ASP has partnered with the Mantas do Brasil Project to promote this important conservation project and conduct joint environmental education actions for the conservation of Manta rays and oceans through various educational activities such as theater, photo exhibitions, lectures, and films focusing on shark consumption and ocean pollution.

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MEROS DO BRASIL PROJECT

We have a partnership with the Meros do Brasil Project, which aims to carry out conservation actions for the Atlantic Goliath Grouper, a critically endangered species, and its habitat, the oceans. The project involves conservation education actions through educational activities, dissemination of the Project, research, and exchanges of technical species management data, and mainly collaboration in forming the species' first reproductive stock.

TAMANDUÁ INSTITUTE

With the increasing degradation of natural environments and the lack of studies on anteaters, especially the subpopulation of northeastern Brazilian anteaters (never studied before), it is urgent to gather information about the biology and ecology of these animals. Thus, ASP has invested in generating knowledge about the species, which has allowed the implementation of conservation strategies for both the species and its habitat (mangroves) and other species that cohabit the Parnaíba Delta region.

SAVE BRASIL

Thinking about the conservation of all Brazilian biomes and ecosystems, and because a significant part of our collection consists of animals that live in Atlantic Forest environments, ASP has partnered with SAVE Brasil (Society for the Conservation of Birds in Brazil) to encourage a broader audience to join the SAVE Friend Program, a program that allows direct collaboration in the conservation of Brazilian birds. This action involves benefits for members and the promotion of the program to a larger audience.

SEAHORSE PROJECT RJ

Continuing with the preservation of the marine environment, the São Paulo Aquarium has a partnership with the Seahorse Project/RJ, which aims to combine efforts for the conservation of seahorses Hippocampus reidi, Hippocampus erectus, and Hippocampus patagonicus through joint environmental education, scientific dissemination, and scientific research actions. The project also involves exchanging technical information on species management and reproduction and collaborating with the Genetic Bank managed by the Project.

GIANT OTTERS PROJECT

The São Paulo Aquarium has established a partnership with the Giant Otter Project to facilitate clinical analyses of samples collected by the Project from animals in their natural environment. This aims to improve the understanding of the health status of the giant otter population they study and to develop science for the species' conservation. In addition, this partnership also enables the exchange of information and educational materials to expand conservation education outreach for giant otters.

UNIVERSIDADE DE MOGI DAS CRUZES

The São Paulo Aquarium and the Universidade de Mogi das Cruzes (UMC) have signed a technical and scientific cooperation agreement for the conservation of fish species in the upper Tietê River. UMC, through the Laboratory of Genetics of Aquatic Organisms and Aquaculture (LAGOAA), is repopulating fish species in the Tietê. Environmental education and the importance of this iconic river are among the key pillars of the São Paulo Aquarium's mission. The partnership aims to join efforts through an integrated ex-situ management program, including joint environmental education initiatives and scientific dissemination activities.
